Cody

The lower half of my body still tingled as Alyssa and I grabbed a quick breakfast in the cafe. My mind was still blown by what happened in my bed. It’s probably like what astronauts experienced when they first left the earth’s orbit.

“It’s too bad we have to leave this morning,” I said as Alyssa slathered strawberry cream cheese on a bagel. I’d never see her mouth the same again.

“Yeah. This has been the best job I’ve ever worked.”

“You already know I’m starting firefighter training tomorrow,” I said. “What’s in store for your week?”

“I have to touch up the photos from the shoot and get them to the client as fast as possible,” Alyssa said.

I grabbed Alyssa’s hands after she set down her bagel. Looking deep into her gorgeous blue eyes, I said, “Alyssa—what happened between us upstairs—it wasn’t just me wanting to get off. I see something more in you.”

Alyssa smiled. “Oh, Cody. I feel it too.”

“I want to continue getting to know you. I know we’re both going back to Denver today but I want to see you again.”

“Of course,” Alyssa said.

I swallowed down the last of my coffee. “The trainee schedule will be nuts but we can find some time together.”

“I’m flexible this time of the year,” Alyssa said.

We grabbed our bags, and she followed me to the front desk as I checked out. The manager interrupted the transaction. “Sir, are you traveling east?”

“Yes, to Denver,” I said.

“Another snowstorm is blowing through. They thought it would stay to the north, but it changed course.”

Alyssa put her hand on my back. “What are we going to do?”

I checked a website on my phone I’d found to be the most accurate for road and weather reports. “Right now they’re saying four-wheel-drive vehicles should manage okay if they go slow.”

“Screw it,” Alyssa said. “I’ll chance it because I have to get home to edit these photos.”

I grabbed her hand. “No, you won’t. I don’t want anything happening to you. You can ride in my truck, I’ll take you home.” The urge to protect her rose above all else.

“You don’t have to do that,” Alyssa said.

“I know. I want to protect you, Alyssa.”

“What about my car? I can’t just leave it out here.”

“I’ll arrange to get it back to you. Hell, I’ll Uber out here and get it if I have to. I’ll even let you borrow my truck until then, if you need it. You’re not driving in that shit out there.”

“Fine,” Alyssa said, rubbing my back.

Only a thin layer of snow covered the roads as we left the resort and headed east. Enough traffic had created tire tracks; I didn’t have to turn on four-wheel drive. According to the radar, the snow would be thicker later in the drive.

“Thanks for looking out for me,” Alyssa said. I glanced over to the passenger seat and was struck by her beauty.

As we headed down a long downhill stretch of interstate, I noticed a car pulled over ahead with its hazard lights on.
